Green Harvest Initiative

Growing healthier food and stronger farming livelihoods.

Fruit trees, healthy growing, practical learning and reliable water for farming in Musanze.

LOCATION

Musanze District, Rwanda

FOCUS

Food, fruit trees, gardens, skills and livelihoods

PRIORITY NEED

Reliable water for nurseries and growing

THE CHALLENGE

Food production depends on more than seeds.

Farmers and families need practical ways to improve nutrition, diversify what they grow and strengthen livelihoods while responding to soil, climate and water constraints.

Who it supports: farming households, young people, community volunteers and local growers who can benefit from practical food production, nursery skills and stronger links to livelihood opportunity.

WHAT WE DO

Practical growing, learning and water support.

Fruit trees & agroforestry

Develop nurseries, propagate useful trees and strengthen planting and care skills.

Healthy gardens

Support household, school and demonstration gardens for vegetables, nutrition and practical learning.

Practical learning

Connect local knowledge with technical guidance on soil, crops, tree care, nutrition and market opportunity.

Solar-supported irrigation

Use solar-powered irrigation where appropriate to support nurseries, farms and demonstration plots as a tool for more reliable farming.

WORK IN MOTION

Nursery work is underway.

Community members have begun fruit-tree nursery work with practical mentorship.

NEXT MILESTONE

Strengthen nursery systems and reliable water.

Nursery and practical growing work is underway with community participation and technical mentorship. Reliable water remains a key constraint, making irrigation and water storage the next priorities for expansion.

Nursery setup

Strengthen seedling care, nursery organisation and the practical systems needed to keep young trees healthy.

Learning design

Organise practical community learning around planting, growing, nutrition and long-term tree care.

Water planning

Prioritise reliable water storage and irrigation before increasing the scale of nursery and garden activity.
